Academic Strategies & Interventions

Teach prerequisite skills needed to do grade level/classroom
work.
Structure seat work to include activities to reinforce
learning that can be done successfully at students independent level and grade level
activities with a peer partner.
More time daily engaged in reading at instructional level

Direct, systematic instruction to build skills in area(s) of
identified weakness
Consult with special education teacher/other staff for
strategies and suggestions in how to teach concepts/skills in a different way.
Increase use of visuals, charts, models, exemplars for easy
student reference.
Use of multisensory techniques to present information, cue
students, and aid in learning of all content areas
Supplement instruction using alternative approaches to
teaching the concept/skill.
Increase student use of manipulatives and tools of
technology to learn skills and concepts and reinforce learning.
Utilize books on tape - student listens and follows along in
text.
Teach active reading strategies (i.e., SQ3R), summarizing,
identifying main ideas, story grammar skills.
Allow use of calculators, graph paper to align numbers,
charts, manipulatives, and other aides for math.
Teach math facts using mnemonics to make rhymes.
Set math facts to music and practice at regular intervals.
Provide several process examples in math.
Increase instruction to explicitly teach: the writing
process, prewriting strategies, handwriting, coherent and expanded sentence/paragraph
writing, written organization, mechanics, editing.
Modify written work requirements (e.g., shorten assignment,
allow student to dictate responses, allow to print rather than write in cursive).
